You just can't go wrong with this classic! * 1 Frita Suprema - This one takes things up a notch with fried white cheese and sweet plantains. The mix of flavors was incredible! * Order of Fries - Basic crinkle-cut fries. They weren't bad, just nothing special. The Verdict: My grandpa and I enjoyed every single bite. “ My husband and I are obsessed with this place. We were in Miami for a wedding and asked a friend for recommendations. This place was on the list and it also turned out this was the first place my brother wanted to try. It's very unassuming, but the wait staff is friendly and there was a laid back, old school luncheonette vibe. We got a bunch of things, including juices, shakes, cafe con leche, empanadas, maduros, eggs, and the frita dulce (frita with maduros). Everything was really good (the meat empanada was not my favorite but was really unique, huge fried dough section, and the guava empanada was really tasty). I got scrambled eggs with ham and somehow even that was amazing. The frita dulce is my husband's new favorite sandwich, and it was delicious (i couldn't get a whole one, too rich for me). Our favorite juices were mango, the limonada, and the tamarind. And everything was incredibly affordable. We tried going to Sanguich after walking off brunch, and waited an hour in line just to be told they were out of cubanos, so we came back to the king! And then my husband and I came back one last time on the way to the airport. It's good we don't live close by, this place would put us in our grave. ”

As my family planned a self-guided food tour through Little Havana, the El Rey on Calle Ocho seamlessly fit into our trip. The Little Havana location shares an unassuming strip mall with a liquor store, barber shop, and laundromat. Just beside the entrance is a vertical ordering window equipped with a paper menu taped to glass. Inside, harsh fluorescent lights shine down upon the quintessential diner layout. Laminated wood booths line the left wall, while a counter with stainless steel barstools loops around the right. The striped orange-white-and-blue are heavily decked with novelties and knickknacks, from old frame photographs to vintage beer signs to an El Rey-logoed skateboard. The space is well air-conditioned even on a balmy summer day, and Spanish-language radio blends with the hum from the kitchen. My family and I arrived around lunchtime on a weekday, and the shop was moderately busy, almost entirely with Spanish-speaking locals. Efficient service came with a smile. We opted for the tried-and-true Frita Original. The oblong, pumpkin-orange patty was barely visibly underneath the mountain of crispy onions and julienned potatoes, and the airy Cuban roll bun was slightly pressed. The sandwich was greasy, flavorful, and juicy, and it was a reasonable size for the price: just $6 (after tax and tip). Apart from the soapless bathrooms, our experience was a positive one. El Rey is a solid stop that should be added to any Little Havana itinerary; their frita admittedly outperformed most Cubanos that we tried across Florida. ”

They have an extensive menu, so there is plenty to choose from. As you walk by and check out what other customers are eating, the food looks pretty good!!! That soup specially, de Res! And a Frita is a traditional Cuban burger made out of seasoned ground beef and pork (sometimes mixed with chorizo) on Cuban bread topped with shoestring potatoes. So as you can imagine you can not only get a good one here at El Rey but many variations of it. There are several El Rey locations throughtout Miami but this one is located in a small shopping on 8th street. Parking can be tricky since there aren't many options but not impossible. The restaurant offers booths and countertop seating along with a ventanita window service. Service is quick and friendly. As for the food, I always go for the Frita which is not only delicious but also a great deal as most of them are under 7 dollars. Today I went with the El Caballo which is a regular Frita with a sunny side up egg on it. When that yolk breaks, it just coats all that Frita with all its eggy goodness. Highly recommend. My wife opted for the Pechuga de Pollo. She also loved it and it came with rice and beans and an extra side which we got tostones (fried green plantains). For dessert we went with the Churros which were made to order and came out piping hot. Service was on point. They were very attentive especially given it was towards the end of the night and they had several tables. I recommend giving this El Rey De Las Fritas a visit not only for a good Frita Cubana but also to enjoy the old diner like vibe with old Miami and Cuba pictures throughout the restaurant. You might even want to take a ride on their mechanical horse/zebra. ”
